The Produce Scoop

Hi! My name is Meg. You can find me mostly over here babbling about my on going culinary adventures: creating a pizza that deserves to be worshiped, relying on the husband Josh, to figure out a special surprise ingredient and would you look at my very own stuffed mushroom recipe!

As I go through my recipe testing I’m constantly googling when different fruits and vegetables are in season and, after having a run-in with uncooperative produce, I have come to the conclusion that I am either not selecting proper produce or I am storing them improperly. My solution was to create a collaboration of facts on produce, such as selecting and storing information, all in one place that I can quickly reference. Here you will find when certain fruits and vegetables are in season — because nothing is better than fresh, ripe produce — and how to properly select and store produce. I might throw in a few nutritional facts or historical facts as I please.

Short disclaimer: the information on peak seasons listed under each fruit or vegetable is relative to where you live in the world. The peak seasons listed are a general approximation. It could be slightly sooner or last a little longer depending on where you live. The best way to find out if a certain produce is in season is by visiting your local farmer’s market. Typically, they will only supply ripened, freshly picked fruit and vegetables. Do not rely solely on your local supermarket. Most super markets carry fruits and vegetables such as berries, citrus fruits and many vegetables that are not in season but that are available year round.

Fruits and vegetables can be found in the produce index. Updates are available through the RSS feed or you can get email updates by subscribing over here. If you are feeling frisky feel free to click Surprise Me! It will randomly take you to a fruit or vegetable and all their juicy facts.

Is this a produce question? Leave it in the comments section for the post it relates to. Emails can take me weeks to respond to, but I will almost always respond to comment questions the same day. Unsure about a fruit or desperately need to get the low down on your favorite vegetable? Send a request and I will do my best to accommodate.
