Welcome to The Red Spoon. Please, stay a while. Have a look around. Make yourself comfortable.
What is this place, you ask? That’s difficult to define. The Red Spoon is…an idea. It’s an overstuffed chair by the fire for the weary mid-market restaurateur exhausted from twice cooked dishes scorched by heat lamps. It’s an overstocked chemistry lab for those of us who don’t simply like butter, or wine, or pancetta—we love them and want to know the full extent of their powers. It’s a peepshow for the closeted food voyeur—don’t worry you can come out now. This is a safe place. And, most of all, it’s an ongoing history of the continuing culinary adventures of Meg, existing on the idea that home cooked food made from scratch with the freshest ingredients really can take your breath away like the first time you saw Patrick Dempsey round the corner at Seattle Grace Hospital.
Whoa whoa, pump the breaks. Who is this Meg character? Meg is a pretty normal girl with an extraordinary passion for cooking. She found herself thrown into the kitchen as a newlywed at the age of 19, her kitchen repertoire consisting primarily of boxed cake mixes and bland soup starters. Before long, Meg found herself dissatisfied with these uninspiring and forgettable dishes and sought new frontiers.
She likes (loves?) bacon, mushrooms, caramelized onions and all varieties of cheese. She carries great reverence for her holy trinity of olive oil, bacon, and salt, and can usually be found standing on a chair in the kitchen hunched over a camera set high above her latest concoction, sternly warning Josh not to disturb her in her office.

Whoa whoa, pump the breaks, brohan. Who is this Josh character? And I respond to you, who isn’t this Josh character? Josh is the husband, the primary taste tester, chief editor and grammar/spell checker, and all around decent guy. He has highly discriminating taste and loathes (read: hates (read: has murder in his heart for)) suburban manufactured chain restaurants that all look alike, taste alike, serve the same twelve dollar cheeseburgers, and seem to all shop at the same place for wall décor.
He likes nutella, chocolate, peanut butter, any combination of the previous three, lamb, thick sandwiches, crusty bread, sourdough bread, thick sandwiches made on crusty sourdough bread, anything pizza related, cilantro, and goat cheese. Without Josh’s enthusiastic cheerleading skills (which he emphatically labels as encouragement and not skirt wearing) Meg would still be stuck on Duncan Hines and store bought brownies.
So how do I get around this imaginarium-oasis of joy and…joyness? There’s a recipe index for starters, and a page dedicated to converting measurements and their equivalents. You can also find lots of good information on produce facts, selection, and storage at the Produce Stand, a How To page chocked full of pictures and twelve step programs, and a Tips page giving quick blurbs on the differences between products or cooking short cuts.
You can also become a fan of The Red Spoon on Facebook and follow Meg’s rants and rambles on Twitter.
